Public Libraries Victoria, the peak body representing the state’s 272 public libraries, congratulates the Hon Daniel Andrews MP and the Victorian Labor party on their success in the 2018 state election.
PLV representatives appreciated the opportunity to meet with Ministers and Shadow Ministers during the election campaign to prosecute the case for even stronger support of our state’s public libraries.
Our libraries welcome 30 million visitors a year, provide more than 4 million free Wi-Fi and computer sessions, and deliver early literacy support to more than 15,000 preschool children and their families each week. Around 40 per cent of public libraries provide adult literacy activities or English language programs. Public libraries in Victoria have more than 2 million library members, and nearly a third of Victorians participated in a library program last year.
We look forward to working with the returned government, Ministers, Shadow Ministers and all MPs to increase the understanding of the role of libraries in our communities and seek support for:
Increasing operational funding by including population growth in the funding formula
Modernise library infrastructure by doubling the highly successful and oversubscribed Living Libraries Infrastructure Program
Supporting libraries with dedicated funding to expand early years programming, with funding targeting the provision of early literacy and STEM education.
