Changes to Provision of Online Databases
On March 16th 2010 a general meeting of PLVN Members decided to discontinue the Gulliver consortium from July 2010. While we remain committed to the provision of online resources in libraries, it was felt that Gulliver's role could now be taken over by the National Library Electronic Resources Australia (ERA). In addition, there are now a large number of free online resources which were not available at the time Gulliver was established. The Online Resources (formerly Gulliver) Special Interest Group will continue and will evaluate databases, provide a forum for discussion and assist libraries to market online resources. New interactive features will soon be added to this section of the website.
BRUCE will continue unchanged. For BRUCE prices for 2010-11, members should log in to GulliverNet -see below. Please note that ProQuest is no longer participating in BRUCE. Contact ProQuest directly to get a quote for your library. PLVN continues to arrange a state wide subscription to Ancestry Library Edition.
Online Database Training Wiki
Moonee Valley Library Service has produced a wiki for staff to improve their knowledge of online databases and to be able to answer reference inquiries confidently using the databases. It includes 10 weeks worth of databases to review - approx 30 minutes per week. Moonee Valley has the highest per capita use of databases in Victoria so they are obviously doing something right!
