Volunteers in Libraries

Volunteers in libraries

Many Victorian public libraries use volunteers to enhance the services provided to the public.

It should be noted that most library tasks require specialised training and/or qualifications and are not suitable for voluntary workers.

The most common use of volunteers in Victorian libraries is in the delivery of books to people who are housebound by reason of age, illness or disability.   Many libraries would  not be able to provide this valuable service if it were not for the contribution of volunteers.  In addition, volunteers can provide an enhanced service in that they have the time to spend talking to the recipients and developing a close relationship.

Some libraries also use volunteers to provide training to members of the public on a one to one basis in areas such as literacy and basic computer and internet skills.

If you are interested in volunteering at your local library, please make enquiries there regarding opportunities.
